There is a growing requirement for hydrogen to be compressed to pressures up to 10,000 psi or greater for fuel cell vehicle (FCV) refueling. Electrochemical Hydrogen Compression (EHC) technology will meet that need. Hydrogen fueling applications require hydrogen compressors with pressures as high as 900 bar. Current commercial hydrogen compressors are not adequate to meet projected infrastructure demands. Existing mechanical compressors are inherently inefficient and have many moving parts, resulting in significant component wear and excessive maintenance, particularly at low capacity utilization. Sustainable Innovations’ H2RENEW™ technology purifies hydrogen generated from natural gas or methane, as add-on technology to a steam methane reformer (SMR) or a fuel cell directly fueled by natural gas or methane. The vast majority of hydrogen produced globally is derived from natural gas processed by large steam reformers at industrial gas companies. Steam methane reforming (SMR) is the process by which a natural gas or other methane stream, such as biogas or landfill gas, is reacted with steam in the presence of a catalyst to produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide. SMR produces a hydrogen rich gas that is typically on the order of 70-75% hydrogen, along with smaller amounts of methane (2-6%), carbon monoxide (7-10%), and carbon dioxide (6-14%). In order to meet the purity requirements of high tech markets such as fuel cell vehicles, SMR-produced hydrogen must undergo additional purification, normally via pressure swing adsorption (PSA). The delivery of hydrogen requires compression (or liquefaction). In addition to hydrogen purification, the H2RENEW™ is capable of fulfilling compression requirements by delivering pure compressed hydrogen at pressures >3,000 psi.
